Throughout the 18th century, a war was fought between Austria and France, hostilities took place in the Caribbean. In 1744, a small group of Angilians united with the people of the other island of St. Kitts, recaptured part of the island of Sint-Marsen, which was inhabited by the French. A year later, the French tried to capture Anguilla, but to no avail. They repeated their second attempt only fifty-two years later, but were again defeated.
From the 17th century. until the middle of the 20th century. the island was ruled from Saint Kitts, which was merged with several islands into a large-scale colony called the Leeward Islands. And only since 1967, the three islands of Anguilla have united into a federation, having received the status of a union with Great Britain, but with internal self-government. And in 1969, as a result of the Angilian uprising, the independent Republic of Anguilla was proclaimed. A month later of the same year, the British established order on the island, but Anguilla remained under the control of local authorities, although it did not leave the federation. At the end of the 20th century, the state managed to secede from the three islands, now having its own government, governor and parliament.
