South-West Tower and walls of the Vologda Kremlin

Historical center of Vologda

The city of Vologda in the north-west of Russia can hardly be called a tourist center. The regional center is located far from the tourist central region of the country. The Golden Ring ends in Yaroslavl, and cruises go through Rybinsk. Vologda remains on the sidelines. It takes a long time to come here by car, and it is expensive by plane. And there is really nothing to watch here. So I ended up in Vologda only for a short while. But I would like to share my impressions.

In general, Vologda is a typical provincial town. Most of them are built up with unremarkable 5 and 9-storey buildings. It is only partially landscaped. Not all streets have sidewalks and curbs.

However, the historical center of this old Russian city – the Vologda Kremlin and the surrounding territory – leaves a very pleasant impression.

In the meantime, there is no need to know about it. ”In the meantime, there is no need to know about it. ”In the meantime, there is no need to know about it. ”

Kremlin square

The historic center of Vologda begins from the Kremlin Square. The noisy streets of Mir, Batyushkov, filled with people at the Central Department Store and the City Market, suddenly end when the walls of the Vologda Kremlin appear.

After crossing the pedestrian crossing over Pobedy Avenue, it is as if you are entering another world. The fuss ends here. There are no cars, few people. Only the domes of churches and lovingly planted flowers.

Kremlin Square is such an exemplary square in Vologda. It’s clean and beautiful here. All the houses are painted. A whole block of historic houses of the 19th century has been preserved.

The central place among these old houses is occupied by a gift shop of Vologda goods, which stands out against the general background with its bright green color. Here they sell goods for which the region is famous throughout the country – Vologda lace, Vologda milk, etc.

The panoramic view of the Kremlin Square is well displayed on the stand, which I found here. In a large building in the center of photography is the Vologda Lace Museum.

Vologda temples

The square ends with a church called the Temple of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky. The temple on this site was built back in 1556. And the building acquired its modern look in the 1860s, after the completion of the bell tower.

The church offers an excellent view of the main relics of the Vologda Kremlin.

And the most impressive historical monument in Vologda, the oldest building in the city – St. Sophia Cathedral of the 16th century:

St. Sophia Cathedral was built by order of Ivan the Terrible in 1570. This is one of the largest surviving structures from the era of Ivan the Terrible. Today it is the cathedral of the Vologda diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.

About 50 meters from the cathedrals of the Vologda Kremlin runs the bank of the Vologda River. The so-called Cathedral Hill offers a view of another picturesque church on the other side of the river.

The temple built in 1664 is called the Church in the name of St. John Chrysostom (Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women). Looks beautiful on the river bank.

From Sobornaya Gorka along the river bank there is a park with pedestrian paths, where you can arrange a small promenade.

You can freely go inside the Vologda Kremlin. The Kremlin is small in size and consists of only a few buildings.

On the territory you can find the following art objects:

And this is the central building of the Vologda Kremlin – Simonovsky building built in 1870, with a church on the roof:

What can I say in the end? My short walk through the historical center of Vologda passed with positive emotions. The Vologda Kremlin, which is small in size, has left a good memory of itself. If you are ever in Vologda, then take at least half a day to visit this historical place.

The station, the train and the way home awaited me further.
