We all know that sinking feeling you get when you look up at the departures screen in the airport lounge, only to see that your flight has been delayed. When you are travelling you just want to GET THERE! Hanging about is boring, frustrating and a waste of time. Or is it?! There are plenty of creative things you can do with your time while you are waiting, so don’t see it as an inconvenience – there is absolutely nothing you can do about it, so see it as a gift of time instead! Here are some great ways to kill time at the airport:
Every airport has a duty free lounge which is packed full of treats for you and your loved ones. Take your time wandering around the aisles and spoil yourself with a little perfume or makeup! You might as well take advantage of the great prices! You can pick up alcohol, designer clothes, makeup, perfume and aftershave all at hugely discounted rates so treat yourself – the credit card can take it!
You might as well use your time wisely, so why not clear out your email inbox, organise your diary or even book your airport transfers and hotels for your next flight? Clear out old text messages on your phone, empty your to-do list and write new lists of things you need to do. Going away feeling organised is very reassuring – and how often do we have time to sit and do boring stuff like that normally?! Grab a coffee and get stuck in!
Busy people rarely get the time to immerse themselves in a good book! Either download an e-book on your smartphone or go retro and browse the airport’s bookstore. Reading is a pleasure we don’t indulge in enough these days. Is there a classic you have always wanted to read? Perhaps there is a subject you have always wanted to know more about? Whatever you choose, reading is a great way to distract yourself, so make yourself comfortable and get those pages turning! Even reading a newspaper or a trashy mag can be a major indulgence.
It can be hard to get sleep in an airport lounge, but they always sell eye masks, travel pillows and ear plugs so you could give these a try and see how you get on. Even if you don’t nod off completely, a while spent with your eyes closed will still help to revive and relax you. Just don’t fall into such a deep slumber that you miss your flight!
If someone hands you a few hours to please yourself, then make the most of it! This is bonus time for you and for that reason you should never waste it. Do a crossword, talk to a stranger, enjoy a little people-watching – you can do whatever you want. The flight will arrive sooner or later, and before you know it you’ll be back on life’s treadmill again, wishing you had a few extra hours in the day! Well right now you do, so what are you going to do with it!?
